Gamu Nhengu X Factor 2010

Go Gamu!: Gamu become bookies favourite after X Factor

When Gamu Nhengu took to The X Factor stage on Saturday night, she wowed the audience and judges with her stunning, unique version of Walking on Sunshine.

Her performance has led her to become the bookies early favourite to steal Joe McElderry’s crown, but life hasn’t always been so sweet for Gamu.

She was just three when her dad died in Zimbabwe. Later, in a bid to give her family a better life, Gamu’s mum went to study at Stirling University, leaving her daughter to look after her brothers in poverty stricken Harare.

Gamu joined her mother in Tillicoutry, Scotland, when she was 13.

A family source told the Daily Record: "Gamu's had a hard life but you'd never know. She has such a sunny disposition."

The beautiful, articulate, young lady revealed that her X Factor hopes not only stem from a longing to perform, but also a yearning to give back something to her mother.

Geri Halliwell said: "I think she'll be very proud of you - if you were my daughter I certainly would be."

Saturday night’s X-Factor introduced two young contenders who could go all the way. Cher Lloyd is the 7/2 favourite at William Hill, however, Liam Payne could be the one to make the bookies sweat.

His absolutely belting rendition of Michael Buble’s Cry Me A River had the audience on their feet and Hills make the 16 year-old the 6/1 joint second favourite with Gamu Nhengu.

“We were absolutely blown away by Liam and we really think that he could be one to watch this year. 6/1 at the moment looks like a very good price,” said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.
